Standards (and practices?)

Hello friends!

It's been well over a week since I've posted, made a video, or done much of any work on my 1750 Blood Angels list. I've had company from abroad staying with me since a week ago Sunday, so I've been preoccupied with non-Warhammer related things, but I do have a few new things to show, namely my tactical squad's sergeant. I hand-painted his standard, and I'm really pleased with the results. It might not look that great on that high-resolution photo, but it really looks sharp three feet away on a table! It's simple, but also it's my first hand-painted standard. Baby steps.

I also finished painting a fourth Rhino, so now all three assault squads and my tactical squads have mobility. What I'm waiting for is the arrival of my Death Company box, Dante, and three Baal Predators. I'm guessing they won't arrive for several days though, which gives me time to try and put transfers on all my troops - something I'm really not looking forward to. But hey, it's a new skill to learn.

I also have a 5th Rhino that I need to paint, but since it's for the Death Company I need to do a little research on the best way to highlight black vehicles -- the blending techniques on the regular red Rhinos was pretty simple and effective, but I'm not sure blending would look so good on a black one. Time to do some research!

I'll keep you all posted.

Fight the good fight!

Blood Angels 1750 List - Update 3

Hey everybody!

So it's been a busy five days as far as modeling and painting goes. I've been pretty productive, and in fact the biggest constraint on finishing my army is waiting for models I've ordered to actually arrive at my independent retailer.

So what's changed since my last update? Assault squads! Added the third and final one to the list! I also finally finished my marine with the lascannon, and I assembled and painted an 11th marine with a meltagun just to add some extra options to the unit.

Currently I'm painting my 4th rhino which should be done either tonight or tomorrow, and after that I'll just need a Furioso Dreadnaught, a box of Death Company w/rhino, Dante, and three Ball Predators. I also need to finish painting Brother Corbs. Poor Corbs.

The one thing I'm starting to dread is the prospect of applying all the water transfers to the army - I'm nervous about screwing up, and transfers seem like they'd be difficult to undo. I foresee a long, long night of tweezers and squinting - but I'm saving that for the very end. I'll rebase them first. Here's my latest video update:

Man, I want to play!

More Progress - And Another Video

Hey everyone! Another quick update here. I've finished my second rhino, which brings my total army to:

2 Assault Squads
2 Rhinos
1 Tactical Squad w/Lascannon
Brother Corbulo

Here's a pic of my updated rhinos and assault squads in all their glory, guarding the top of my computer case for the Emperor.

It's not bad for a start. Though I'm building a 1750 army, my goal is to have a playable 1000 point list before the entire army is finished, just so I can get some damn games in! The 1k list I'm thinking of is as follows:

Brother Corbulo (100)
Furioso Dreadnought w/Extra Armor (115)
Death Company (4 models) + Rhino (70)
Tactical Squad w/Lascannon (135)
Assault Squad w/Rhino + Extra Armor x2 (155 each)
Baal Predator w/HB spons, Extra Armor, SB (135)

Total Cost: 995

That's a base list I'm thinking about -- though I might drop the SB on the Baal Pred and put extra armor on the DC rhino - not sure yet. Any thoughts? Keep in mind it's been over a decade since I've built a 40k list.

I've given all of this a quick once-over on a YouTube video. Enjoy!

Progress

Hey everyone, Brother Bolgard here.

It's been a few days, and I'm just about to wrap up my very first Rhino. Of course, when I looked at the hi-resolution picture of it I just took, my heart sank when I found several tiny tiny spots of unpainted primer that I missed, and that most people would never see with the naked eye, but will haunt me unless I fix them. Barring that, however, I'm very pleased with the results! I really love the way the eagle came out as well!

I also finished a second assault squad, and I'm priming their Rhino as I write this. This force is really starting to come together (though my HQ choice still needs some work... just haven't been in the mood to give the good Brother the attention he deserves).

I'll post a video soon. More to come!

Humble Beginnings

Hey everyone, Brother Bolgard here coming to you from the great state of Maine.

This blog is to chronicle my experiences returning to 40k after approximately a 13 year break. Things are new and scary after all this time! We're in fifth edition, fer crissake! How did that happen?

I've decided to dive in by creating a Blood Angel's army in the spirit of Jawaballs' list - using his painting tutorials to slowly ease my way back into the game. So far, here is the fruit of my labor:

I have yet to battle-test this core 500 point block -- but I'm chomping at the bit to finish these boys up and get down to the game store and give them a run for their money. It's a shame there are so few places to play Warhammer 40k in Southern Maine!

More updates to come.
